Know the area

The houses and streets of Bletchley.

Bletchley grew before the new city, so most of it is 1930s to 1960s semis and terraces with a short front garden that was never meant for two cars. Converting that front garden to a full-width drive is the most common change, and many houses share a side access or have a narrow existing concrete drive. Newton Leys on the southern edge is new build with small block drives that can be extended.

What suits these houses

On a 1930s to 1960s semi with a short front, a two-car block paved drive makes the biggest difference of anything you can do to the house: it takes two cars off the road and gives you a clean, level front. Resin bound suits a front where you want one smooth surface to the door. A new dropped kerb often goes with it, and on Newton Leys the small builder's block drives can be extended.

Local rules

Kerbs, councils and skips in Bletchley.

The council, the drainage rule and where the skip goes. Terry checks all of it on the visit, so you know what to expect before you commit.

Dropped kerbs and the council

Milton Keynes City Council's highways team has to approve a dropped kerb first (there is a fee for a residential application), then a contractor licensed by the council to dig up the pavement does the work. It is an offence to cut into the road, the pavement or a redway (MK's network of red cycle and foot paths) without that permission. Terry handles the council application and arranges the kerb with the drive; the council approves the contractor and sets the fee. How dropped kerbs work.

Conservation area

The Bletchley conservation area covers Old Bletchley and Bletchley Park around St Mary's church, Church Green Road, Buckingham Road, Rickley Lane and Whalley Drive; there the council encourages boundary walls that match the neighbours and discourages close-boarded fencing at the front. It does not stop you having a new drive or patio; Terry checks what applies to your house before you choose a material.

Drainage and planning

Since 2008, new or replacement paving over five square metres in a front garden in England needs planning permission unless it is permeable (permeable block paving, resin bound on a permeable base, porous asphalt, gravel) or the rain runs off to a lawn or border to soak away on your own land. The paving, base and drainage are designed together for the site. Read the planning guide.

Parking and skips

The older streets around Fenny Stratford, Water Eaton and the station are tight for on-street parking, so we plan skip and van space with you before day one and apply for a skip permit if it has to sit on the road.

Terry and his team just did an amazing job of our driveway, which was deliberately installed incorrectly 5 1/2 years ago by another company. Terry understood this and reduced our worries of repeat problems. We are so grateful to them all, working long days in extreme humidity and heat. Thank you…

Questions people in Bletchley ask Terry.

Can I turn my front garden into a drive in Bletchley?

Usually yes: a permeable surface, or one that drains to a lawn or border on your own land, needs no planning permission, and Terry handles the dropped kerb application with Milton Keynes City Council. Terry checks the road, the depth of the front and any trees or services at the visit.

I live in Old Bletchley near the church. Does the conservation area stop me having a drive?

No, but the front boundary and materials matter more there. A brindle or charcoal block or natural stone edge and a low wall or hedge to match the street is what the council wants to see.

Which driveway suits a house in Bletchley?

On a 1930s to 1960s semi with a short front, a two-car block paved drive makes the biggest difference of anything you can do to the house: it takes two cars off the road and gives you a clean, level front. Resin bound suits a front where you want one smooth surface to the door.

Where do the van and skip go on a job in Bletchley?

The older streets around Fenny Stratford, Water Eaton and the station are tight for on-street parking, so we plan skip and van space with you before day one and apply for a skip permit if it has to sit on the road.
