Is it right for you?

Artificial grass or real turf?

Both start with the same thing: the old lawn out and a proper base in. The base is what keeps a lawn flat, and it is what cheap jobs skip.

It suits you if

  • Your lawn is mud from October to April and you are sick of it
  • You have dogs or kids and want something that hoses clean
  • You want the front garden low maintenance to go with a new drive
  • You want a real lawn that is actually level for once

Think again if

  • You want a lawn for wildlife, or you like mowing. Real turf, laid on a levelled base, is the honest answer
  • The garden is in full sun all day and you sit on it barefoot. Artificial grass gets warm

How we build it

How we lay a lawn that stays flat.

Artificial grass goes lumpy or wrinkled when it is laid straight on soil or on a thin base. Real turf goes uneven for the same reason.

  1. Levels and edges checked

Terry checks the levels, the drainage and what the edges will be. You get one written price and a day count.

  2. Old lawn out

Dug out and taken away, not covered over.

  3. Compacted stone, then grit

A layer of stone compacted flat, then fine grit levelled and compacted on top. Real turf gets levelled topsoil over the drainage layer instead.

  4. A drain on clay

The backing is perforated and the stone lets rain through. On heavy clay we add a drain so water does not sit under it.

  5. Stretched and pinned

Artificial grass rolled out, stretched, joined, pinned and brushed with sand. Turf laid tight and rolled.

  6. A proper edge

A block or timber edge so it stays put. Site swept, guarantee terms written on your quote.

Price and paperwork

What moves the price, and what you get in writing.

No prices on this page. A photo on WhatsApp gets you a rough idea, and the written price comes after Terry's free visit. This is what moves it.

  • Area. The size of the lawn drives the grass, the stone and the days.
  • Artificial or turf. Artificial grass costs more up front than real turf and mostly needs a brush afterwards.
  • Dig out. The old lawn and soil have to come out and go in our skip.
  • Drainage. Heavy clay needs a drain so water does not sit under the lawn.
  • Edging. A block or timber edge keeps it in place. Curves take longer than straight runs.

Where it sits: Lower to middle of the garden jobs; artificial more than turf up front.

Really pleased with the work done in the garden. The team removed the trees quickly and efficiently, and installed new fence panels exactly as requested. Everything was carried out with care and attention to detail. They cleaned up thoroughly afterwards, leaving the space tidy and ready to use. All…

Terry and his team just did an amazing job of our driveway, which was deliberately installed incorrectly 5 1/2 years ago by another company. Terry understood this and reduced our worries of repeat problems. We are so grateful to them all, working long days in extreme humidity and heat. Thank you…

Lawn questions people ask Terry.

Why does artificial grass go lumpy or wrinkled?

Because it was laid straight on soil or on a thin base. We dig out, lay compacted stone and a fine grit layer, compact that flat, then stretch and pin the grass. Laid like that it stays flat for years.

Does artificial grass drain?

Yes, the backing is perforated and the stone base underneath lets rain through. On heavy clay we add a drain so water does not sit under it.

Is artificial grass okay with dogs?

Yes. It hoses clean, does not go muddy and does not get dug up. Pick a pile height that suits, and rinse it now and then in summer.

Real turf or artificial?

Real turf is cheaper, cooler in summer and better for wildlife, but needs mowing and goes muddy in an MK winter. Artificial costs more up front and mostly needs a brush. Terry will say which suits your garden.

How long does it take?

Terry gives you the day count with your written quote. The artificial lawn in our photos took 2 days. Real turf needs watering for the first few weeks.

How long does artificial grass last?

Around 15 years for a decent product on a proper base. Cheap grass on a bad base fades and wrinkles much sooner.
