Is it right for you?

Which fence suits your garden?

A fence is the quickest garden job we do and the one people put off for years. Close board, composite, ranch and picket, on concrete or timber posts. Here is what the choices mean in plain words.

It suits you if

  • Your old fence is leaning, rotten at the base or blew down last winter
  • You want privacy from a new build or a footpath behind
  • You want a gate to the side of the house that locks and shuts cleanly
  • You want the front garden framed with a low picket or ranch fence

Think again if

  • You want it to look like brick. A wall costs more and lasts longer
  • The fence would be over 2m, or over 1m by the road. You will need permission first

How we build it

How we build a fence that stays upright.

Post depth and level is where a fence is won or lost. The panels are the easy part.

  1. Boundary checked

Terry walks the boundary with you and checks which side is yours before anything comes out. You get one written price and a day count.

  2. Old fence out, properly

Panels, posts and the concrete lumps they were set in come out and go in our skip.

  3. Posts 600mm or more

Concrete or timber posts set 600mm or more into the ground in quick-setting concrete, checked with a level and a line.

  4. Concrete where it rots

Most of our fences go on concrete posts with a concrete gravel board at the bottom, so nothing timber sits at ground level.

  5. Gate posts deeper

Gate posts go deeper and are set in more concrete than a fence post, so the gate does not drop and scrape after a year.

  6. Good side your way

Gravel boards, panels and gates fitted with the good side facing whichever way you ask. Site swept, guarantee terms written on your quote.

Price and paperwork

What moves the price, and what you get in writing.

No prices on this page. A photo on WhatsApp gets you a rough idea, and the written price comes after Terry's free visit. This is what moves it.

  • Length of the run. Every extra panel is another post, another gravel board and more concrete.
  • Posts. Concrete posts cost more than timber ones and last far longer.
  • Panels. Close board, composite, ranch and picket are all priced differently. Composite costs more than timber.
  • Gates. Gate posts go deeper and take more concrete, and the gate has to be hung properly.
  • The old fence. Old panels, posts and their concrete lumps all come out and go in our skip.

“Really pleased with the work done in the garden. The team removed the trees quickly and efficiently, and installed new fence panels exactly as requested. Everything was carried out with care and attention to detail. They cleaned up thoroughly afterwards, leaving the space tidy and ready to use. All…”

Absolute 10/10 job. Organising job was so easy. Patio extenstion was at the best price we found. Job completed in a few hours to perfection and left spotlessly clean. Couldnt of ask for anything more. Now we can enjoy our garden this summer!

Terry and his team just did an amazing job of our driveway, which was deliberately installed incorrectly 5 1/2 years ago by another company. Terry understood this and reduced our worries of repeat problems. We are so grateful to them all, working long days in extreme humidity and heat. Thank you…

Fencing questions people ask Terry.

Concrete or timber posts, which is better?

Concrete posts last far longer because they cannot rot at ground level, which is where every timber post fails. Timber posts look nicer and cost less. Most of the fences we put up in MK go on concrete posts with a concrete gravel board at the bottom.

Do I need planning permission for a fence?

Only if it is over 2m high, or over 1m where it borders a road or footpath. A standard 1.8m close board fence in the back garden is fine.

How long does a fence last?

Longest on concrete posts with a concrete gravel board, because nothing timber sits at ground level where posts rot. Composite panels need the least looking after. Terry talks you through the options on the visit.

How long does a fence take?

It depends on the length of the run and the gates. Terry gives you the day count with your written quote. The closeboard fence in our photos took 2 days, old fence out included.

What about my neighbour's side?

Check your deeds for which boundary is yours before we start. We put the good side facing whichever way you ask, and most people tell next door before the work starts.

Can you fit a gate that actually shuts?

Yes. The posts for a gate go deeper and are set in more concrete than a fence post, so the gate does not drop and scrape after a year. That is the part that usually goes wrong.

Where we work

Where we put up fences.

We fit fences right across Milton Keynes, from the small gardens in Bletchley to the bigger plots in Woburn Sands, and often with a new driveway at the front.
