Block paving, resin or tarmac: which suits your house?

How we build it

What is under a drive that lasts.

Whichever surface you choose, the part that decides whether it sinks, cracks or puddles is underneath. Block paving is shown here; resin and tarmac sit on the same dug-out, compacted base.

Your drive, cut in half. The top is what you see.
Paving blocks50mmSand30mmCrushed stone200-250mmFirm ground
  1. Paving blocks (50mm)Laid by hand in your pattern, cut tight to every edge, then fine dry sand brushed into the joints and compacted.
  2. Sand (30mm)Sharp sand levelled so every block sits at the same height and follows the gentle slope that carries rain away.
  3. Crushed stone (200-250mm)200mm to 250mm of crushed stone laid in layers and compacted with a plate. This is what stops a drive sinking.
  4. Firm groundDug out 250mm to 300mm, with the old surface and any soft ground taken away. A membrane goes down where the ground needs it.

Why drives fail

What separates a drive that lasts from one that sinks.

Most of the repair work Terry does is on drives laid badly by someone else. The problems are always the same three.

  1. No sub-base, or not enough. Blocks or tarmac laid on the old surface or a thin scrape of stone. It looks fine for a year, then the car ruts it. Under every drive Terry lays 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone, compacted in layers.
  2. No edging. Without concrete-set edging, the outside blocks creep and the edge crumbles. Every drive we lay has it.
  3. No drainage. A drive laid flat holds water against the house. Ours are laid to a gentle slope so rain runs off, with a channel drain at the door or garage where it is needed.

Skipping those three is what makes a cheap quote cheap. Driveway repairs explains how we put it right if it has already happened to you.

“Terry and his hard working crew did a wonderful job on the drive. It was so good I then had them replace my decking with the same bricks as the drive which is also wonderful. Would not hesitate to recommend them. They were great. B. King”

Terry and his team did a superb job on our block paving driveway. they were professional and fast, did a great job with the installation. Communication was excellent. They left the finished site clean and tidy, and looking a million times better than the old tarmac driveway and lawn.

More about Terry and the team

Questions people ask Terry.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway in Milton Keynes?

Not if the surface is permeable (permeable block paving, resin bound on a permeable base, porous asphalt or gravel), or if the rain runs off to a lawn or border on your own land. New or replacement solid paving over 5 square metres in a front garden that drains to the road needs permission. Conservation areas and listed buildings can have extra rules, and a dropped kerb needs the council's approval. Terry tells you which applies when he measures up.

Which driveway material is best for a Milton Keynes house?

Block paving suits most houses here, because it can be lifted and relaid if the water board ever digs it up and there are patterns and borders to match the brick. Resin bound suits a smooth, modern look. Tarmac suits big drives with a lot of turning.

How long does a new driveway take?

Most two-car drives take two to three days from dig out to finish. Tarmac can be done in one to two days and resin bound in two, then it usually needs about 48 hours before you park on it. Terry confirms the day.

Do I have to be home while the work is done?

No. We need access to the front and water and power on the first day. Terry updates you by text or WhatsApp as the job goes on.

Why are some driveway quotes so much cheaper than others?

Usually because the cheap one skips the dig out, lays a thin base or leaves out the edging and drainage. That drive sinks and puddles within a couple of winters. Every Unique Driveways drive sits on 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone with concrete-set edging and a proper slope for the rain.

What happens if the water board digs my drive up?

Block paving is lifted and relaid with the same blocks and you cannot see the join. Resin and tarmac have to be cut and patched, and the patch shows, which is one reason we recommend block paving for most MK houses.

Where we lay driveways

Milton Keynes and fifteen miles around.

Terry covers the whole of Milton Keynes and about fifteen miles around it. The small fronts on the semis in Bletchley are where a two-car block paving driveway makes the biggest difference. In Newport Pagnell and Stony Stratford the older houses and conservation areas tend to suit brindle block or natural stone. The longer drives out at Woburn Sands are often where tarmac earns its keep, and resin bound goes on anything where you want a smooth, clean finish. See our work and every review before you ring.
