Is it right for you?

What kind of drainage problem have you got?

Water is the thing that wrecks drives, patios, walls and lawns, and it is the thing most firms skip. Here is what we fix and how. Same day quotes in some cases: one of the reviews below is exactly that.

It suits you if

  • Your lawn is under water every winter
  • Rain runs off the drive into the garage or against the house
  • A patio or path has puddles that never dry
  • A downpipe just empties onto the ground next to the wall

Think again if

  • The water is coming from a broken sewer or a burst pipe. That is a drainage company job and Terry will say so
  • It is a neighbour's land draining onto yours. The drain still helps, but the cause is theirs

How we build it

How we give the water somewhere to go.

Most MK gardens flood because water has nowhere to go, not because of the soil. Every fix starts with that question. Look first, then dig.

  1. Find where it goes

Terry checks the levels, the soil and where the nearest place for the water is before anything is dug. You get one written price and a day count.

  2. Channel drains in concrete

A slot drain with a grating set in concrete at the low edge, by the garage door or the house.

  3. Land drains for lawns

Perforated pipe in gravel, wrapped in membrane, along the low side or in a herringbone under the lawn.

  4. Soakaways sized right

Crates or stone wrapped in membrane, at least 5m from the house and big enough for your roof or drive area.

  5. A slope on everything

Everything we lay has a gentle slope (about 1 in 80), so the water goes where we want it.

  6. Put back so you would not know

Paving or turf back over the top, rebuilt on a proper stone base where a drive or patio goes over it. Site swept, guarantee terms written on your quote.

Price and paperwork

What moves the price, and what you get in writing.

No prices on this page. A photo on WhatsApp gets you a rough idea, and the written price comes after Terry's free visit. This is what moves it.

  • Length of the drain. A channel across a garage door is shorter than a land drain along the whole lawn.
  • The soakaway. It has to be big enough for your roof or drive area, which sets how much is dug.
  • What goes back on top. Paving or turf has to come up and go back so you would not know.
  • The ground. Heavy clay drains slowly, which is why most MK gardens need somewhere for the water to go.
  • Doing it with other work. A garden job alongside a drive or patio costs less than two visits, because the digger, the skip and the team are already on site.

Where it sits: Lower to middle of the garden jobs on its own; less when done with other work.

“Terry was able to come round the same day to give us a quote and then complete the job the next day. We needed a new manhole and the foundations rebuilding. All done quickly and very professionally. Thanks so much.”

Absolute 10/10 job. Organising job was so easy. Patio extenstion was at the best price we found. Job completed in a few hours to perfection and left spotlessly clean. Couldnt of ask for anything more. Now we can enjoy our garden this summer!

Terry and his team just did an amazing job of our driveway, which was deliberately installed incorrectly 5 1/2 years ago by another company. Terry understood this and reduced our worries of repeat problems. We are so grateful to them all, working long days in extreme humidity and heat. Thank you…

Drainage questions people ask Terry.

Why does my garden flood?

Usually because the water has nowhere to go. MK sits on heavy clay, new estates are built on compacted ground, and a patio or drive with no slope sends rain straight to the lowest corner. A drain that gives the water somewhere to go fixes most of it.

What is a soakaway?

A hole filled with crates or stone, wrapped in membrane, that takes water from a drain or downpipe and lets it soak into the ground slowly. It has to be at least 5m from the house and big enough for your roof or drive area.

What is a channel drain?

A slot drain with a grating that runs along the edge of a drive or patio, usually by the garage door or the house, and takes surface water to a soakaway or the drain. It is what stops rain running into the garage.

Can you fix water pooling on my driveway?

Yes. Sometimes it is a sunken section that needs relaying, sometimes a channel drain at the low edge. Terry looks at where it pools and tells you which.

Will a drain stop my lawn being a bog?

A land drain along the low side, or a herringbone of perforated pipe in gravel under the lawn, running to a soakaway, drains a boggy lawn. It goes in with a new lawn or on its own.

Do I need permission for drainage?

No for a soakaway in your own garden. Connecting surface water to the public sewer needs the water company's agreement, which is why we use soakaways wherever the ground allows.

Boggy gardens are common on the clay in Newport Pagnell and Shenley. If the drive is the problem, see driveways and driveway repairs.
