Channel drain and silver border set into charcoal block paving

The straight answer
Sunken sections, crumbling edges, puddles and rutted tarmac can all be repaired. Terry lifts the bad area, rebuilds the base under it with compacted stone and relays the same blocks, so the repair lasts instead of failing again next winter.
If the blocks are sound and the problem is in one or two areas, repair is the right call and Terry will say so. If the whole drive went down without a base, relaying it on 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone costs less over ten years than patching it every spring. That is a new block paving driveway, and the old blocks can often be reused.
Either way the visit is free and the price is in writing.
Our work
A repair is relaid to the standard of a new drive, on 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone. These are drives we have laid round here, and one full relay below.

See more of our workWhy drives fail
Nearly every repair Terry does comes back to the same thing: no sub-base, or one that was too thin and never compacted. Blocks laid on sharp sand over the old concrete look fine on the day and sink the first winter.
The second cause is no edging, so the outer blocks creep and the joints open up. The third is no drainage, so water sits and washes the sand out. A repair that only tops up the sand will fail the same way, which is why Terry rebuilds the base under the bad section every time.

Step by step
What happens, in order, from your first photo to a drive you can park on again.
Ring Terry or WhatsApp a photo of the sunk or broken section. He replies the same day with a rough idea and a day to visit.
He lifts a block or two and looks at what is underneath. You get a written price for a repair, and a price for a relay if that is honestly the better deal.
The blocks over the bad area come up and are stacked to go back. The failed base is dug out to firm ground.
Concrete-set edging where it is missing, drainage fixed, then 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone.
Sand levelled and the same blocks relaid level with the rest, so the repair does not stand out.
Plate compacted, fine dry sand brushed into the joints, site cleared, guarantee in writing.
What moves the price
A repair price depends on what failed and how far it has spread. Terry finds the cause first, then prices the fix.
One sunk patch by the garage is a different job to edges gone all the way round.
A missing base, a missing edge or water with nowhere to go. Each needs a different fix under the surface.
Sound blocks are cleaned and relaid. Cracked or discontinued ones need matching.
A channel drain, a soakaway or a relay to a proper slope, if water is the cause.
A repair usually costs less than a relay, and Terry will say when it does not. WhatsApp a photo for a rough idea first. The written price comes after Terry’s free visit, once he has measured and seen what is underneath.
Reviews
“Terry was quick to offer good advice and got the work done promptly. His men worked very hard to transform our old sunken drive into a modern, clean space. Very pleased with the results.”
Suzy Dumbleton, Google review

Terry was able to come round the same day to give us a quote and then complete the job the next day. We needed a new manhole and the foundations rebuilding. All done quickly and very professionally. Thanks so much.

Terry and his team recently done our driveway. We are absolutely in love before it looked all dull and chipped now it looks clean professional and modern exactly what we wanted and imagined it to look like, Terry and his team are friendly, professional and reliable, they left the job clean and took…

Just had my drive completed by Terry and the team at unique and really professional with great workmanship, I'm really pleased and couldn't recommend enough. Simon (Deanshanger)
What you get in writing
Terry's quote is a written document, not a number on the doorstep. It says what failed, what is being dug out and rebuilt, what holds the edge in and where the rain goes. If a relay is honestly the better deal, you get that price too.
The guarantee is set out in full on our guarantee page, including what it does not cover.
Ask for the same list from anyone else quoting. If it is not in writing, it is not promised.
Yes, and it is the most common repair Terry does. The blocks over the sunk area are lifted, the base under it is dug out and rebuilt with compacted stone, and the same blocks go back. Done well you cannot see where it was.
Potholes and sunk patches in tarmac can be cut out and filled hot, though the patch will show. Resin bound can be patched for a small area but the colour is hard to match; if a large part has failed it is usually better to relay the whole drive.
Almost always because the sub-base was too thin, not compacted, or missing. Water gets in, the ground moves and the surface follows it. The fix is to rebuild the base under the bad section, not to pack more sand under the blocks.
If the blocks are sound and the problem is one or two areas, repair. If the whole drive was laid without a base, or the edges have gone all round, relaying the lot on a new base costs less in the long run than patching it every year. Terry tells you which when he visits, and he will say if repair is the better deal.
Yes. A lot of Terry's repair work is putting right drives laid by someone else. He looks at what went wrong first so the repair does not fail the same way.
Yes. A drive that puddles was laid flat or sloping the wrong way. Depending on the drive, the fix is a channel drain, a soakaway, or relaying the section to a proper slope.
Where we lay it
Everything we do to drives is on the driveways page. Terry repairs drives across Milton Keynes, Bletchley and out to Leighton Buzzard. The cost guide explains what moves a repair price and the reviews page has the rest.
