The straight answer

Is a resin bound driveway right for your house?

Resin bound is the drive for a smooth, modern finish with no loose stone, no puddles and no weeds. It is laid in 2 days on a solid base, is usually ready to park on about 48 hours after, and lasts 15 to 20 years with a sweep and a rinse.

Who it suits

Houses where you want one clean surface from the road to the front door, awkward shapes and curves that would need a lot of cuts in block, and anyone tired of gravel that ends up in the hall. Water drains straight through it, so there are no puddles, and on a new permeable base there is usually no planning permission needed. It looks right on a modern detached house and just as good on the terraces in Wolverton.

Who it does not suit

Resin needs a solid base. It is 15mm to 18mm thick, so it is only as strong as what is under it. If the existing surface is cracked, sunk or loose it has to come out and be rebuilt first, which is part of why resin bound sits at the top of the three on price. It also cannot be lifted and relaid; a utility trench has to be cut and patched. If your street has a history of digging, block paving is the safer bet.

Grey resin with a porcelain path

A grey resin bound drive with a porcelain path running up to the front door, so the path reads as its own thing and the drive stays one smooth surface.

How we build it

What is under resin that lasts.

Resin is only 15mm to 18mm thick, so it is only ever as good as what it sits on. Most resin failures are base failures, which is why the base gets the most attention.

  1. Resin and stone (18mm)Natural stone mixed with resin and trowelled by hand, 15mm to 18mm thick. Rain drains straight through.
  2. Porous base (70mm)A new porous tarmac base, or sound existing tarmac or concrete, so the resin has something solid to bond to.
  3. Crushed stone (200-250mm)200mm to 250mm of crushed stone, compacted in layers.

Step by step

How Terry lays a resin bound drive.

What happens, in order, from your first message to parking on the new drive.

  1. You get in touch

Ring Terry or WhatsApp a photo of the drive or path. He replies the same day with a rough idea and a day to visit.

  2. Terry checks the base

He checks the existing base with a hammer and a level. If it is solid, you keep it and the price drops. If not, he tells you why it has to come out.

  3. Base

Where a new base is needed: dig out, concrete-set edging, a gentle slope and drainage, 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone, then a porous tarmac or concrete base to carry the resin.

  4. Mix on site

UV-stable resin and dried aggregate mixed on site in a forced action mixer, a batch at a time.

  5. Trowel in one pass

Spread and trowelled by hand to a set depth in one continuous pass so there are no joins.

  6. Cure and guarantee

Foot traffic usually the next day, cars after about 48 hours; Terry confirms both. Site cleared and the guarantee in writing.

What moves the price

What moves the price of a resin drive.

A resin quote moves with the base more than anything else. Here is what Terry looks at.

Read the cost guide

Whether the base can stay

A solid, crack-free base can stay and the price drops. A cracked or sunk one has to come out and be rebuilt first.

Area and shape

Resin copes with curves without cuts, so the area matters more than the shape. Paths and drives can go in together.

Edging and slope

A block edge set in concrete gives the resin a clean line to finish against, and the base still needs a gentle slope.

Stone and resin spec

The stone colour and a UV-stable resin that keeps its colour. Both named on the written quote.

Resin bound sits at the top of the three surfaces on price, mostly because of the base. WhatsApp a photo for a rough idea first. The written price comes after Terry’s free visit, once he has measured and seen what is underneath.

Before you choose

Six questions to ask any installer.

Ask everyone who quotes the same six. Tap a question for our answer, then compare like with like.

How deep will you dig out, and what goes back in?

We dig out the old surface and soft ground and lay 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone in layers before anything you can see goes down.

What holds the edges in?

A block edge set in concrete. It gives the resin a clean line to finish against and stops the edge breaking up.

Where will the rain go?

Every drive is laid to a gentle slope so rain runs off, away from the house, with a channel drain at the door or garage where it is needed.

Is the price in writing?

Yes. One written price after the free visit. It sets out the start date and days on site, the base depth, the edging and drainage, the dig out and waste, the 10-year written guarantee, our insurance and the 14-day cooling off.

Who will actually be on site?

Terry quotes every job himself and is on site while his team lays it. For some resin surfaces he brings in a specialist resin crew, working to his base.

What if something goes wrong later?

A 10-year written guarantee on the workmanship, printed on your quote, and a number Terry still answers after the job. See what it covers.

How to spot a cowboy quote

Questions people ask Terry.

How long does a resin bound driveway take?

Two days on site if the base is sound, three if a new base goes in, then usually about 48 hours before you park on it. The resin itself goes down in a day.

Does a resin driveway need a new base?

It needs a solid one. Resin bound is only 15mm to 18mm thick, so it is only as strong as what is under it. Terry lays it on a new tarmac or concrete base over 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone, or on an existing base only if it is solid and free of cracks.

Is resin bound permeable, and do I need planning permission?

Yes, rain drains straight through it into the base and the ground, so there are no puddles. Usually no planning needed when it is laid on a new permeable base or drains to your own garden. On an existing solid base draining to the road, over 5 square metres can need permission. Terry checks this on the visit. Resin bound is different from resin bonded, which is a scatter of stone glued to a sealed surface and is not permeable.

How long does resin bound last?

Fifteen to twenty years is a fair expectation on a proper base. UV-stable resin keeps its colour; cheaper non UV-stable resin yellows in a couple of summers, which is one of the things Terry checks on the spec.

What if it gets dug up?

Resin cannot be lifted and relaid the way block paving can. A utility trench has to be cut out and patched and the patch will show, so if your street has a history of works, Terry may suggest block paving instead.

How do I look after it?

Sweep and rinse it. An occasional low-pressure wash deals with leaves and moss. Keep oil off it, and never use a wire brush.
