Know the area

The houses and streets of Buckingham.

The centre around Market Hill, West Street and Castle Street is Georgian and Victorian brick with little or no front garden. The town roughly doubled from the 1970s, so most homes are on estates such as Page Hill, Badgers, Bourton and Linden Village with average fronts and concrete or early block drives that are now wearing out, and Lace Hill on the south side is 2010s new build with small block drives.

What suits these houses

Most of Buckingham is 1970s and later estate housing, so many fronts have a worn concrete or early block drive that a two-car block or resin bound drive would replace. Tarmac with a block edge suits the longer drives and turning areas on the edge-of-town and village plots. On the Georgian and Victorian houses in the centre, brindle block and natural stone sit well against the brick.

Local rules

Kerbs, councils and skips in Buckingham.

The council, the drainage rule and where the skip goes. Terry checks all of it on the visit, so you know what to expect before you commit.

Dropped kerbs and the council

Buckinghamshire Council's highways team looks after the roads here: you need planning permission or a letter saying none is needed, then a vehicular access licence, and a contractor qualified for street works does the work, so allow around a month for the paperwork. Terry handles the council application and arranges the kerb with the drive; the council approves the contractor and sets the fee. How dropped kerbs work.

Conservation area

Buckingham's conservation area covers the historic town centre, and the council consulted in 2025 on extending it along Moreton Road, Stowe Avenue, Mitre Street and Station Road, so check before changing a frontage on those streets. It does not stop you having a new drive or patio; Terry checks what applies to your house before you choose a material.

Drainage and planning

Since 2008, new or replacement paving over five square metres in a front garden in England needs planning permission unless it is permeable (permeable block paving, resin bound on a permeable base, porous asphalt, gravel) or the rain runs off to a lawn or border to soak away on your own land. The paving, base and drainage are designed together for the site. Read the planning guide.

Parking and skips

Town centre streets are narrow and busy, so a skip goes on the plot or with a permit; the 1970s and later estates have space on the drive for van and skip.

Terry and his team just did an amazing job of our driveway, which was deliberately installed incorrectly 5 1/2 years ago by another company. Terry understood this and reduced our worries of repeat problems. We are so grateful to them all, working long days in extreme humidity and heat. Thank you…
