Is it right for you?

Is Indian sandstone the right patio for you?

Sandstone is the patio most people picture. Natural, warm and cheaper than porcelain, with a bit more upkeep in return.

It suits you if

  • You want a natural look that suits an older house or a brick garden wall
  • You like the variation; no two slabs the same
  • You want to spend less than porcelain and still have stone
  • You do not mind a jet wash and a coat of sealer every few years

Think again if

  • You want the lowest upkeep. Porcelain usually needs no sealing
  • Your patio is in deep shade and stays damp. Moss will come faster
  • You want perfectly uniform colour. Sandstone is never that

How we build it

What is under sandstone that stays level.

Every slab goes on a full mortar bed, not dabs, with the colours mixed across the patio rather than laid in patches. Underneath it, the base does the rest.

Your patio, cut in half. The top is what you see.

  1. Patio slabs (20mm)Laid to a gentle slope away from the house so rain runs off, not in.
  2. Mortar (30mm)Every slab bedded on a full bed of mortar, not dabs, so nothing rocks or cracks. Porcelain gets a primer so it bonds.
  3. Crushed stone (100mm)Crushed stone compacted in layers.
  4. Firm groundTurf, soil and roots taken out down to firm ground.

Price and paperwork

What moves the price, and what you get in writing.

No prices on this page. A photo on WhatsApp gets you a rough idea, and the written price comes after Terry's free visit. This is what moves it.

  • Size and shape. A simple rectangle costs less per square metre than curves, circles and lots of cuts.
  • The slab. Porcelain costs more than Indian sandstone, which costs more than concrete flags.
  • What is there now. Old slabs, concrete, turf and tree roots all have to come out before the base goes in.
  • Levels. A sloping garden that needs a retaining wall and steps costs more than a flat one.
  • Drainage. Some gardens need a channel drain or a soakaway; some do not. Terry checks where the water goes.

Sandstone questions people ask Terry.

Does Indian sandstone need sealing?

Yes, if you want it to keep its colour and stay clean. We seal it once it has dried out after laying, and a jet wash and reseal every few years keeps it looking new.

Why does every slab look different?

Because it is natural stone cut from a quarry, not made in a mould. The variation is the point. Terry lays it so the colours are mixed evenly across the patio rather than in patches.

Will it go green or grow moss?

Any natural stone in a shady, damp corner can. Sealing slows it right down and a jet wash once a year takes it off. A gentle slope so water does not sit on it helps most.

How long does a sandstone patio take?

2 to 4 days for most gardens. The dig out and base is the bulk of it; the laying is quicker than porcelain.

What colours can I have?

The common ones are grey, buff, brown and a mixed blend. Terry brings samples so you can see them wet and dry against your house.

Is sandstone cheaper than porcelain?

Yes, both to buy and to lay. It sits in the middle of the three patio materials we use. The cost guide explains what else moves the price.

Where we work

Where we lay sandstone.

Sandstone suits the older houses in Stony Stratford and Newport Pagnell and goes well with a brindle block driveway at the front.
