Know the area

The houses and streets of Stony Stratford.

The High Street and the streets off it are Georgian and Victorian, tight to the pavement, with long narrow rear plots reached by side passages. Galley Hill and Fullers Slade are 1960s and 70s estates with small fronts, garages and shared parking, and Fairfields on the western edge is new build with short block drives. Front drives on the older streets are rare; back garden patios and drives from rear lanes are more usual.

What suits these houses

The Georgian and Victorian houses on and off the High Street suit natural stone and brindle block. Bright grey block on a period frontage tends to look wrong, so Terry usually shows you brindle or a buff mix, or Indian sandstone for the long rear gardens. On Galley Hill and Fullers Slade a two-car block or resin drive suits the small fronts, and resin bound copes with an awkward shape without cuts.

Local rules

Kerbs, councils and skips in Stony Stratford.

The council, the drainage rule and where the skip goes. Terry checks all of it on the visit, so you know what to expect before you commit.

Dropped kerbs and the council

Milton Keynes City Council's highways team has to approve a dropped kerb first (there is a fee for a residential application), then a contractor licensed by the council to dig up the pavement does the work. It is an offence to cut into the road, the pavement or a redway (MK's network of red cycle and foot paths) without that permission. Terry handles the council application and arranges the kerb with the drive; the council approves the contractor and sets the fee. How dropped kerbs work.

Conservation area

Stony Stratford's conservation area covers the historic High Street and Market Square, with well over a hundred listed buildings, so any paving or wall at the front should be natural stone, brindle clay-style block or setts in keeping, and listed houses need consent for frontage changes. It does not stop you having a new drive or patio; Terry checks what applies to your house before you choose a material.

Drainage and planning

Since 2008, new or replacement paving over five square metres in a front garden in England needs planning permission unless it is permeable (permeable block paving, resin bound on a permeable base, porous asphalt, gravel) or the rain runs off to a lawn or border to soak away on your own land. The paving, base and drainage are designed together for the site. Read the planning guide.

Parking and skips

The High Street is narrow with restricted parking, so the team plans deliveries early in the day and a skip usually goes on the plot or with a council permit.

I cannot recommend these guys enough. What a great job - levelling the muddy slope to accommodate a lovely new patio with some steps. 5* job and great work ethic. Done and dusted in a couple of days. Thank you

Questions people in Stony Stratford ask Terry.

What materials work in the Stony Stratford conservation area?

Natural sandstone, tumbled or brindle block and granite setts all look right next to the old brick. Bright grey concrete block or plain tarmac at the front of a listed or conservation area house is the thing to avoid.

Can you get materials to a house with no front access on the High Street?

Yes, most of the older houses have a side passage or rear lane and we barrow everything through. Terry measures access at the visit so the price already allows for it.

Who handles dropped kerbs in Stony Stratford?

Milton Keynes City Council's highways team has to approve a dropped kerb first (there is a fee for a residential application), then a contractor licensed by the council to dig up the pavement does the work. It is an offence to cut into the road, the pavement or a redway (MK's network of red cycle and foot paths) without that permission. Terry handles the council application and arranges the kerb with the drive.

Which driveway suits a house in Stony Stratford?

The Georgian and Victorian houses on and off the High Street suit natural stone and brindle block. Bright grey block on a period frontage tends to look wrong, so Terry usually shows you brindle or a buff mix, or Indian sandstone for the long rear gardens.

Where do the van and skip go on a job in Stony Stratford?

The High Street is narrow with restricted parking, so the team plans deliveries early in the day and a skip usually goes on the plot or with a council permit.
