Which job?

What do you need doing in the garden?

Five jobs, one honest table. Costs are relative, not figures, because every garden is priced on a visit.

Cost band Time on siteUpkeepPlanning permission
Garden wallsMiddle to higher3 to 5 days, up to a week with a retaining wall Very little for many yearsOver 2m, or over 1m next to a road

DeckingMiddleOn your quote. Our composite deck took 3 daysOil timber yearly. Composite just needs a washOnly if raised over 300mm

DrainageLower to middleOn your quote. Our side path drain took 2 daysClear the channel grating now and thenNo

Time on site is for a typical MK back garden. Big plots and sloping gardens take longer.

Most garden jobs we do are one or two of these together: a fence and a new lawn, a wall and some steps, or a drain put in before the patio goes down.

Terry prices the whole garden in one visit. The cost guide explains what moves the price.

How we build it

Why garden work fails, and what goes in the ground first.

Almost every wall that cracks, fence that leans, deck that bounces or lawn that goes lumpy was skimped in the ground. This is what goes under each of ours.

  1. Walls: a real footing

A concrete footing at least 300mm deep and wider than the wall, deeper on clay or where the wall retains soil.

  2. Fences: posts 600mm down

Concrete or timber posts set 600mm or more into the ground in quick-setting concrete (postcrete). Most go on concrete posts with a concrete gravel board, because timber rots at ground level.

  3. Gates: deeper again

Gate posts go deeper and are set in more concrete than a fence post, so the gate does not drop and scrape after a year.

  4. Decking: a frame that breathes

Posts on concrete pads, joists close together (400mm apart) and an air gap underneath so the underside dries out.

  5. Lawns: stone, then grit

Old lawn out, compacted stone and a fine grit layer compacted flat, then the grass stretched and pinned.

  6. Drainage: somewhere to go

A channel drain at the low edge, a land drain under the lawn, or a soakaway at least 5m from the house.

“Really pleased with the work done in the garden. The team removed the trees quickly and efficiently, and installed new fence panels exactly as requested. Everything was carried out with care and attention to detail. They cleaned up thoroughly afterwards, leaving the space tidy and ready to use. All…”

Absolute 10/10 job. Organising job was so easy. Patio extenstion was at the best price we found. Job completed in a few hours to perfection and left spotlessly clean. Couldnt of ask for anything more. Now we can enjoy our garden this summer!

Terry and his team just did an amazing job of our driveway, which was deliberately installed incorrectly 5 1/2 years ago by another company. Terry understood this and reduced our worries of repeat problems. We are so grateful to them all, working long days in extreme humidity and heat. Thank you…

Garden questions people ask Terry.

Do I need planning permission for a garden wall or fence in Milton Keynes?

Not usually. You need permission if the wall or fence is over 2m high, or over 1m where it borders a road or footpath. Terry tells you which applies when he visits.

Can you do the garden and the driveway together?

Yes, and it is usually cheaper, because the digger, the skip and the team are already on site. Ask Terry to price the whole job when he comes round.

Who owns the fence between me and my neighbour?

Your deeds usually say, often with a T mark on the boundary. If they do not, it is worth a friendly word next door before we start. Terry can advise if it is unclear.

My garden floods every winter. Can that be fixed?

Usually, yes. Most MK gardens flood because water has nowhere to go, not because of the soil. A soakaway, a channel drain or a land drain along the low edge normally solves it. See the drainage page.

How long does garden work take?

Walls and steps take 3 to 5 days, up to a week with a retaining wall. For fences, decks, lawns and drains, Terry gives you the day count with your written quote. The closeboard fence in our photos took 2 days.

Will you take the old fence, wall or decking away?

Yes. Everything we take out goes in our skip and the site is swept every day. You do not need to arrange anything.
