The straight answer

How much will my drive cost?

Every drive is priced on a visit, because the ground under it matters more than the size on top. The price moves with the size and shape, what has to come out, the drainage, the material and extras like a wall or a dropped kerb.

What moves the price

Two drives the same size, two different prices.

These six things decide what your job costs. Terry checks every one of them on the visit, and the written quote says how each is dealt with.

The ground

What is there now and what is under it. Digging out old concrete costs more than lifting old blocks. Soft clay, tree roots and old footings add time.

Size, shape and access

A straight two-car drive costs less per square metre than a curved one with steps. Cuts take time, and a narrow side access means more barrow runs.

The material

Tarmac is the least, block paving in the middle, resin bound at the top. For patios, flags, then sandstone, then porcelain.

Edging and borders

Every drive needs edges set in concrete. A contrast border, a pattern band or a curve adds cutting and laying time.

Drainage

Some houses need a channel drain at the garage or a soakaway; some do not. It depends on where the water goes now and what the rules allow.

A dropped kerb

If the drive is new, the council kerb and the application add to the job. Walls, steps, lighting and a path to the door do too.

Cost bands

Which material costs the most?

There are no prices on this site. A photo gets you a rough idea, and the written price comes after Terry has measured. But the order of the materials is always the same.

Why cheap drives sink

Why a cheap quote is cheap.

The surface is the last few centimetres. The difference between two quotes is nearly always underneath: how deep they dig, what goes back in, and what holds the edges. That is the part you cannot see once it is finished.

Your drive, cut in half. The top is what you see.

  1. Paving blocks (50mm)Laid by hand in your pattern, cut tight to every edge, then fine dry sand brushed into the joints and compacted.
  2. Sand (30mm)Sharp sand levelled so every block sits at the same height and follows the gentle slope that carries rain away.
  3. Crushed stone (200-250mm)200mm to 250mm of crushed stone laid in layers and compacted with a plate. This is what stops a drive sinking.
  4. Firm groundDug out 250mm to 300mm, with the old surface and any soft ground taken away. A membrane goes down where the ground needs it.

Before you sign

What are the signs of a cowboy quote?

  • A price on the doorstep with no measuring and nothing written down.
  • No sub-base depth anywhere in the quote. That is where a drive is won or lost.
  • A big deposit before anything has been dug.
  • "We are in the area this week" and the price only holds if you say yes today.
  • No address, no company name, a mobile number only and no reviews you can find.
  • No mention of drainage. Water has to go somewhere, and the law cares where.

There is a longer version in our guide on how to spot a cowboy driveway quote, and you can check us against every point on it: 299 public reviews, a registered office, and Terry on site while his team lays every job.

A proper quote

How do I compare two quotes fairly?

Most driveway quotes in Milton Keynes look the same on the front page. The difference is in what is written down. Ask every firm for these, in writing, before you compare the number at the bottom.

  1. Sub-base depth. Ours is 200mm to 250mm of compacted stone. If the quote does not say a depth, ask.
  2. Edging. What holds the edge in? Kerbs backed with concrete, or nothing?
  3. Drainage. Where does the rain go? A soakaway, a channel drain, or the road?
  4. Waste. Is removing the old drive and the spoil included?
  5. Guarantee. How long, and is it in writing? Ours is ten years.
  6. Insurance. Ask to see the certificate.
  7. Start date and day count. When, and how many days on site?
  8. Payment terms. No money up front beyond materials. The balance when you are happy.

Cost questions people ask Terry.

How much is a resin driveway in Milton Keynes?

It depends on the size, what has to come out first, and whether it needs a new base or can go over a sound one. Resin bound is the highest of the three main materials. WhatsApp a photo for a rough idea; Terry measures on a free visit and then gives you a written price.

How much does block paving cost in Milton Keynes?

Block paving sits in the middle of the three materials. The price is driven by the area, the dig out, the edging and any drainage, not by the blocks themselves. A straight two-car drive costs the least per square metre.

Is tarmac less than block paving?

Usually, yes. Tarmac is the lowest of the three because it goes down fastest and there are no blocks to cut. It suits big drives with lots of turning. It cannot be lifted and relaid the way block paving can.

How much does a patio cost in Milton Keynes?

It depends on the size, the slab, and how much levelling and drainage the garden needs. Porcelain costs more than Indian sandstone, which costs more than concrete flags. A sloping garden that needs a retaining wall and steps costs more than a flat one.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Terry visits, measures and gives you a written price for free, with no obligation and a 14-day cooling off period. There is no salesman and no pressure.

Do I have to pay anything up front?

Nothing beyond the cost of materials. The balance is paid when the job is finished and you are happy with it. Be wary of anyone who wants most of the money before they have started.
