Dropped kerbs

Who handles the kerb where you live.

Every drive that crosses a pavement needs the council's highways team to approve a dropped kerb first, and around MK that means five councils with five different processes. Terry handles the application and arranges the kerb with the drive; the council approves the contractor and sets the fee.

Milton Keynes City Council

Milton Keynes, Bletchley, Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford, Wolverton, Olney, Shenley and Woburn Sands town centre

Milton Keynes City Council's highways team has to approve a dropped kerb first (there is a fee for a residential application), then a contractor licensed by the council to dig up the pavement does the work. It is an offence to cut into the road, the pavement or a redway (MK's network of red cycle and foot paths) without that permission.

Central Bedfordshire Council

Leighton Buzzard, Aspley Heath and Aspley Guise

Central Bedfordshire Council's highways team looks after the roads here and, unlike Milton Keynes, installs the dropped kerb itself after a paid site visit and quote, so the kerb is applied for separately from the drive and takes longer to schedule.

Buckinghamshire Council

Buckingham

Buckinghamshire Council's highways team looks after the roads here: you need planning permission or a letter saying none is needed, then a vehicular access licence, and a contractor qualified for street works does the work, so allow around a month for the paperwork.

West Northamptonshire Council

Towcester and Deanshanger

West Northamptonshire Council's highways team looks after the roads: you apply, pay a licence and inspection fee, need a paved parking area of at least 5m by 3m, and the work is done by a contractor on the council's approved list; a crossing onto an A, B or C road needs planning permission first.

Bedford Borough Council

Bedford

Bedford Borough Council's highways team looks after the roads and only the council itself can build a dropped kerb: you pay for a site visit and estimate first, the parking area must be at least 6m deep by 3.6m wide, and a frontage on a main (A, B or C) road needs planning permission.

Not sure which council?

Some addresses sit on a boundary: Deanshanger has an MK19 postcode but is in Northamptonshire, and Woburn Sands is split between two councils. Terry checks your address and tells you at the visit.

How dropped kerbs work

Why local knowledge matters

The same drive is a different job in every town.

The houses, the council, the conservation rules and even where the skip can go change from one town to the next. Terry prices all of it on the visit, so none of it turns up as an extra later.

The houses differ

Short fronts on Bletchley's 1930s semis, Victorian terraces in Wolverton, stone houses in Olney, grid estates across MK. What suits one does not suit the next.

Conservation areas

Stony Stratford, Olney, Newport Pagnell, Old Bletchley, Woburn Sands and others have conservation areas where the materials at the front matter. Terry checks before you choose.

Five councils

Some let an approved contractor build the kerb; Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough build it themselves, and Buckinghamshire needs a licence first.

Parking and skips

Narrow high streets, residents' parking zones and redways all change where the van and skip go. It is planned with you before day one.

“Terry and his team just did an amazing job of our driveway, which was deliberately installed incorrectly 5 1/2 years ago by another company. Terry understood this and reduced our worries of repeat problems. We are so grateful to them all, working long days in extreme humidity and heat. Thank you…”

Questions about where we work.

Which areas do you cover?

Milton Keynes and about fifteen miles around it: Bletchley, Newport Pagnell, Stony Stratford, Wolverton, Woburn Sands, Olney, Shenley, Leighton Buzzard, Buckingham, Towcester, Deanshanger and out to Bedford. If your town is not listed, ring Terry and ask.

Is there a call-out charge for a quote?

No. Terry visits, measures and gives you a written price for free. There is a 14-day cooling off period on every quote and no pressure.

How far will you travel?

Bedford and Buckingham, about 30 minutes from MK, are the edge of our area. For a full drive or patio we travel to any of the towns listed here. For a small repair a long way out, Terry will tell you honestly if it is not worth your money.

Do you charge more outside Milton Keynes?

The price is based on the job, not the postcode. A two-car drive in Leighton Buzzard is priced the same way as one in Bletchley: Terry visits, measures and gives you a written price before any work starts.

Who handles the dropped kerb?

Terry handles the council application and arranges the kerb with the drive. The council approves the contractor and sets the fee. Central Bedfordshire and Bedford Borough build the kerb themselves (Terry helps with the application and builds the drive to their rules), and Buckinghamshire and West Northamptonshire issue a licence first. Terry checks your address at the visit.

Where is the business based?

Unique Driveways MK Ltd is registered at Unit 28, 548-550 Elder House, Elder Gate, Milton Keynes MK9 1LR. Terry and the team work from Milton Keynes and cover the towns around it.
